Conjunctival Dermoid
Susan Little DVM, Diplomate ABVP (Feline Practice)
Dermoids are tumour-like masses present from birth. They are abnormal tissue, and are often near the outside corner of the eye, as in this young male cat. Dermoids can contain some of the elements normally found in skin, such as hairs. Two long hairs were growing from the dermoid in this cat. The hairs can cause irritation to the eye.
Dermoids usually do not grow in size much if at all. It is best to remove them if there is a possibility that the abnormal tissue will irritate the eye. The dermoid in this cat was successfully surgically removed.
