What is the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners?

The specialty of veterinary practice was established by the American Board of Veterinary Practice (ABVP) - and is sanctioned by the American Veterinary Medical Association - to set standards for advanced professionalism in veterinary practice.

The objective of ABVP is to promote and recognize high standards in the art and science of veterinary practice. By awarding Diplomate status, the ABVP recognizes individuals who have demonstrated that they are qualified to fill a unique and specific role in the delivery of "state of the art" veterinary service.

The long and difficult process of certification involves additional studies and examination and may take up to three years. When the work is accepted and the exam passed, a veterinarian may be awarded the title of Diplomate. Diplomates must prepare and recertify in their specialty every 10 years.
